The Office of the President is making preparations for the swearing-in of Vice resident Paramananda Jha who remains inactive after the Supreme Court verdict nullified his oath of office taken in Hindi language.
The government sent a letter to the Shitwal Niwas on Friday, informing the latter about the cabinet decision to revive the VP's office following the recent amendment in the constitution, and asking for necessary preparations to organise the swearing-in ceremony.
However, it was not immediately clear whether Jha will take oath of office in Nepali or his mother tongue, Maithili. As per provisions, he has to inform the President's Office if he is planning to take oath in his mother tongue.
The government has expedited the process for the oath so that Jha could take charge as the acting head of state when President Dr Ram Baran Yadav goes on an official visit of India from February 15.
Jha's refusal to abide by the Supreme Court orders to re-take the oath in Nepali language had made the post of Vice President he was elected to defunct. He had courted controversy by taking the oath in Hindi.
Law Minister Prem Bahadur Singh, Minister for Culture and Parliamentary Affairs Minendra Rijal and Attorney General Bharat Bahadur Karki had met President Dr. Ram Baran Yadav at the President's office in Shital Niwas Thursday morning to inform that the government has initiated the process to restore the post of VP and that there remains no legal hurdles for this as the constitution has already been amended to allow public office holders to take the oath of office and secrecy in their own mother tongue.
