International students from non-EU / non-EEA countries must apply for a German Student Residence Permit after entering Germany with a student visa. This permit allows you to legally live, study, and work part-time in Germany.


📌 Who Needs a Student Residence Permit?

You need a residence permit if:

  • You are not an EU/EEA or Swiss citizen

  • You plan to study in Germany for more than 90 days

  • You entered Germany with a student visa


📝 Step-by-Step Application Process

Step 1: Enter Germany with a Student Visa

Before arrival:

  • Apply for a German Student Visa (National Visa – Type D) at the German embassy

  • Required documents include:

    • University admission letter

    • Blocked account (~€11,208 per year)

    • Health insurance

    • Passport & biometric photos


Step 2: Register Your Address (Anmeldung)

Within 14 days of arrival:

  • Register your address at the local registration office (Einwohnermeldeamt / Bürgeramt)

  • Required documents:

    • Passport

    • Rental contract

    • Landlord confirmation (Wohnungsgeberbestätigung)

✅ You will receive a registration certificate (Meldebescheinigung)


Step 3: Open a German Bank Account

  • Open a local bank account

  • Activate your blocked account

  • This account is needed for monthly living expenses


Step 4: Get Health Insurance

  • Mandatory for all students

    • Public student health insurance (~€120/month)

    • Private health insurance (only in limited cases)


Step 5: Book Appointment at Ausländerbehörde

Step 9: Receive Residence Permit Card
