Schengen 90/180 Rule: How to Calculate Your Stay
The Schengen 90/180 rule is one of the most important rules for travelers to Europe. Many people overstay by mistake, so understanding this rule is essential.
๐ What Is the Schengen 90/180 Rule?
๐ You can stay maximum 90 days
๐ Within any rolling 180-day period
๐ In all Schengen countries combined
โ ๏ธ This is not 90 days per country.
๐ Which Countries Are Schengen?
Examples:
Germany
France
Belgium
Netherlands
Spain
Italy
Austria
Portugal
Greece
(and most EU countries)
Time spent in all these countries is counted together.
๐ What Does โRolling 180 Daysโ Mean?
This is the part that confuses most people.
โ The 180 days are counted backwards from today
โ Every day you are in Schengen counts as 1 day
โ Border crossing days also count
There is no fixed start date like January or July.
๐งฎ How to Calculate Your Stay (Step by Step)
Step 1: Choose a Date
Pick the date you want to check (today or future travel date).
Step 2: Count Back 180 Days
From that date, count backwards 180 days.
Step 3: Count Your Schengen Days
Count all days you were present in Schengen within those 180 days.
โ If total โค 90 โ you are OK
โ If total > 90 โ you overstayed
๐ Simple Example 1
You stayed 1 March โ 30 March โ 30 days
You stayed 1 May โ 30 May โ 30 days
Total = 60 days
โ
You can still stay 30 more days
๐ Simple Example 2 (Common Mistake)
Stay: 1 January โ 31 March โ 90 days
You leave Schengen
Try to return on 15 April
โ Not allowed โ some days from January are still inside the last 180 days.
You must wait until enough days fall outside the 180-day window.
โณ When Can You Re-enter Schengen?
You can re-enter only when old days โdrop offโ the 180-day calculation.
โ Each day outside Schengen gives you 1 new available day, once earlier days expire.
